The city was founded upon the arrival of 150 Welsh immigrants in 1865. The name “Puerto Madryn” commemorates Love Jones Parry, who was the baron of Madryn in the Welsh country.
At present, it has 57,800 inhabitants. Puerto Madryn has a high strategic value as it is the headquarters for tourist services provided in the Patagonian coastline and the entrance gate to the Valdés Peninsula, which was declared World Natural Heritage in 1999.

They are also natural vantage points in the whale season (from June to December). During the day, populations of southern right whales may be watched from the shore and during the night, the noise made by these animals give a special atmosphere to the beaches.

EL CALAFATE

General Information

El Calafate lies 316 kilometers from Río Gallegos, and on the shores of Lake Argentino, 185 meters above sea level. It is named after the small shrub called Calafate, typical from southern Patagonia. This fruit, is a very delicious berry used for jam making.
This lake, mountain and glacier region of Argentina has become famous over the world because of the Perito Moreno Glacier, the only one known to grow and advance constantly. At whatever time of the year, the glacier never ceases to amaze; 60 meters towers of ice break up into multiple ice floes which drift on the lake.  Everywhere you go, the scenery is grandiose: snow-capped mountains like the Fitz Roy, lakes with icebergs floating on their blue surface under leaden skies or fantastic cloud formations.
The best time of year to visit El Calafate & surroundings is September to April. But in fall and in Winter this place is beautiful and unique.
The village of El Calafate is situated on the shore of the Lake Argentino. El Calafate is a developing tourist center located at the southern gateway to the Los Glaciares National Park.

About National Park Los Glaciares

Created in 1937 and declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1981, National Park Los Glaciares extends over almost 700,000 hectares of mountains, lakes and forests, including a large section of the Andes, almost covered with ice and snow on the west, and bordered by the Patagonian steppe on the east.
As a result of the thawing of this giant ice mass, two large lakes have been formed: Lago Argentino and Lago Viedma, which pour their waters onto the Atlantic Ocean, and which run along the province of Santa Cruz, creating the serpent-like Rio Santa Cruz. There are more than 300 glaciers inside the Park, of which only 13 are well known, being the famous Perito Moreno, the Viedma (the largest of Argentina) and the Upsala (the second in size) the most outstanding glaciers of the park.
There is a large and interesting flora and fauna inside Los Glaciares National Park. Visitors may enjoy safaris in the Andean Patagonian watching Huemules (stag-like Andean rumiant), pumas (South American panther), red foxes, hares, purple eagles, woodpeckers and the majestic Andean condor. 80,000 hectares of the park are covered with lengas, the mazard tree, distinctive red flowers.

CHALTEN

General Information

El Chalten is located in Lago Argentino Department, on the northern margin of Lago Viedma, at the confluence of Río de las Vueltas and Río Fitz Roy, in the Reserva Nacional Zona Viedma of Los Glaciares National Park.
El Chaltén was founded in this place for geopolitical reasons. The town was set inside the one hundred hectares of a protected area assigned to this issue.
Originally, the name of “Chaltén” which means “blue mountain” or “smoking mountain”-, was given by the tehuelches (former inhabitants of southern continental Patagonia) to the famous Mount Fitz Roy for its unmistakable and magnificent silhouette always covered by a cloud, which made them think of smoke. The breathtaking natural wonders give life to this young tourist village, which is becoming the new World Trekking Mecca.

USHUAIA

General Information

Ushuaia, Capital of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, is the southernmost city of the world, is located on the island of Tierra del Fuego, a coast first spotted in 1520 by Hernando de Magallanes as he explored the area in search of a route between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Ushuaia -which in the yámana language means “bay overlooking the West”- is surrounded by Mount Martial to the West and by Mounts Olivia and Cinco Hermanos to the East. Located on the shores of the Beagle Channel, it offers a unique landscape, which combines mountains, sea, glaciers and forests.
It is more like a mountain village, lying between the rugged coast of the Beagle Channel and the low mountains that protect it from the cold southern winds.
With a whimsical geography, Ushuaia has adapted its features to modern construction, thus developing a very quaint city. It has a very good hotel and gastronomy infrastructure which pleases the expectations of international visitors.
As a result of its location, close to the South Pole, in the summer it has approximately eighteen hours of light, whereas in the winter, it only has seven or eight.
The main activities here are fishing, sheep breeding, sawmills and small industries, such as assembly plants for home appliances. Ushuaia has been declared a free port as an incentive to settlers and tourism because of its geographic isolation.

The winter in Ushuaia is fascinating: driving sledges pulled by dogs, walking through the snowed valleys, practice some Nordic or cross-country ski are some of the activities to enjoy a different winter.
Its people, its origins, its mysticism and its nature are discovered in every step we make. Ushuaia: the end of the world, the beginning of everything.

- Several sea lines and scientific ships include Ushuaia as a stopover in their trips to Antarctica or the Fuegian channels, apart from an important stock transportation from the rest of the country as from abroad.
